STORY

On April 1, 1995, Geert Vanden Wijngaert started working as a freelance photographer for local newspapers and magazines. After a trip to Pakistan in September 1996, he became a full-time freelancer for Belga Press Agency in Brussels. He also produced several socially-inspired travel documentaries for the Belgian weekly magazine P-Magazine and had his work published in various national and international newspapers and magazines.

In 2001, Geert left Belga Press Agency to join The Associated Press in Brussels, where he covered international politics (European institutions, NATO,...), sports (football, tennis, cycling...) and daily news.

​

In 2002 and 2003, Geert won the Nikon Photo Press Award for Best News Photo. In 2017, he received the "Political Image of the Year" award.

After an amazing 18 years, Geert left The Associated Press in 2019 and joined Bloomberg Media. Two years later, he resumed freelancing for The Associated Press.

​

Since 2013, Geert has been the photographer for the Belgian Solar Team and since 2023 he has been covering the Belgian royal family for Getty Images. 

​

In addition to his assignments for national and international newspapers and magazines, Geert is involved in architecture, interior and corporate projects as well as corporate events, business and creative portraits, and real estate photography.
